How to Choose a Web Design Agency in the UK (Without Getting Burned)

31 July 2026 · Britbunch Limited

Choosing a web design agency is a bit like choosing a builder for your house: get it right and you barely think about it again; get it wrong and you're paying twice to fix it. The good news is that the businesses who end up happy almost all did the same few things before signing. Here's how to choose well.

1. Judge them by their clients' sites, not their own

Any agency can make their own website look good. The real test is the work they've done for clients — because that's what yours will look like.

Ask to see a portfolio of live client websites, then actually visit them. Are they fast? Clear? Do they work on your phone? An agency proud of its results will show them off without hesitation. If they can only show mock-ups or their own site, that's a flag. (Ours are live and clickable — that's the whole point of a portfolio.)

2. Make sure you own everything

This is where people get burned. Some agencies build your site on their own platform, register the domain in their name, or hold your files hostage so you can never leave. Then the "small monthly fee" never ends.

Ask directly: "Do I own the website, the domain and the files?" The answer should be an unqualified yes. Your domain, your hosting account, your design files — all in your name, so you're free to walk away at any time. We put this in writing as standard.

3. Get the scope in writing

"A website" means ten different things. Before you pay anything, get a written scope covering:

  • Number of pages
  • Rounds of revisions included
  • Who writes the content
  • On-page SEO and mobile optimisation
  • Launch date
  • What's included after launch

A clear scope protects both sides. Vague scope is how projects drift, budgets balloon, and relationships sour.

4. Ask about SEO and speed from day one

A beautiful website nobody can find is an expensive business card. A good agency builds with search engine optimisation and Core Web Vitals (page speed) in mind from the first line of code — not as an afterthought or an upsell.

Ask: "Will my site be built to rank, and will it pass Google's speed checks?" If SEO is treated as a mysterious add-on, be cautious.

5. Understand the real cost — upfront and ongoing

Cheap-but-broken costs more than done-properly. But you should still understand exactly what you're paying, and what happens next month.

  • What's the one-off build cost?
  • What are the ongoing costs — domain, hosting, maintenance?
  • Are there monthly fees to the agency, and what do they cover?

Watch for quotes that look cheap because they leave out content, SEO or support. (If you'd rather skip the guesswork entirely, our £99.99 website is a single fixed price with no monthly fees to us.)

6. Check they actually communicate

The best-designed website in the world is no good if you can never get hold of the people who built it. Notice how quickly they reply during the sales process — because that's the most attentive they'll ever be.

Look for: clear timelines, a named point of contact, and plain-English answers instead of jargon.

Red flags to walk away from

  • Won't show live client work
  • Dodges the "do I own it?" question
  • No written scope
  • Treats SEO and mobile as expensive extras
  • Locks you into their platform
  • Slow or vague communication before you've even paid

The questions to ask before you sign

  1. Can I see live websites you've built for clients?
  2. Will I own the site, domain and files outright?
  3. What exactly is in the scope, in writing?
  4. Will it be built for SEO and speed?
  5. What are the total costs — upfront and ongoing?
  6. Who's my point of contact, and how fast do you reply?

Get straight answers to those six and you'll avoid almost every web-design horror story.
