Why Your Website Gets Traffic But No Leads (And How to Fix It)

28 July 2026 · Britbunch Limited

It's one of the most frustrating problems in business: your website gets visitors — analytics says so — but the phone doesn't ring and the enquiry form stays quiet. Traffic without leads isn't bad luck. It's almost always one of a handful of fixable problems. Here are the seven most common, and what to do about each.

1. Your message isn't clear in five seconds

When someone lands on your site, they subconsciously ask: "Am I in the right place, and can these people help me?" If your homepage leads with a vague slogan instead of plainly stating what you do and who you do it for, visitors bounce. 75% of people judge a company's credibility by its website — and confusion reads as "not for me".

Fix: Put a clear, specific headline above the fold — what you offer, for whom, where. "Plumber in Dartford, same-day callouts" beats "Quality you can trust" every time.

2. Your call-to-action is weak or hidden

A visitor who wants to act needs an obvious next step. If your call-to-action is buried in the footer, or you offer five competing buttons, people freeze and leave.

Fix: One primary CTA, repeated. "Get a free quote", "Book a call", "Request a callback" — big, visible, above the fold and again at the bottom.

3. Your site is too slow

53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds to load. A slow site quietly kills conversions before anyone reads a word — and it hurts your Google ranking too, because page speed is part of Core Web Vitals.

Fix: Compress images, cut bloated plugins, and use fast, modern mobile-first hosting. Test your speed on Google PageSpeed Insights.

4. Your forms ask for too much

Every extra field on a contact form loses you enquiries. Asking for a phone number, company size, budget and a message when you only need a name and email is friction you don't need.

Fix: Cut the form to the minimum — name, email, one-line message. You can qualify them properly once they're in touch.

5. You're attracting the wrong visitors

Sometimes traffic is high because you rank for informational terms that don't lead to sales — people researching, not buying. Lots of visits, zero intent.

Fix: Target commercial-intent keywords ("emergency electrician near me", not just "how does wiring work"). This is where proper on-page SEO and keyword strategy earn their keep.

6. You give no reason to trust you

Strangers don't hand over money — or even their phone number — without proof. No reviews, no testimonials, no real photos, no address? That's a trust vacuum, and 84% of people trust a business with a proper web presence more than one without.

Fix: Add trust signals — genuine reviews, client logos, case studies, a real team photo, your company number and address.

7. There's no clear path for mobile users

More than half of web traffic is mobile. If your buttons are tiny, your text is cramped, or your form is a nightmare to fill on a phone, mobile visitors — the majority — give up.

Fix: Design mobile-first. Big tap targets, short forms, click-to-call buttons.

The pattern behind all seven

Notice the theme: getting people to your site is only half the job. Conversion — turning a visitor into an enquiry — is a separate skill, and it's usually where the money is being lost. Driving more traffic to a site that doesn't convert just means paying to lose more people, faster.
