You built a website. Months later, it's nowhere on Google. Frustrating — but rarely mysterious. Almost every "my site won't rank" problem is one of eight things. Here they are, with the fix for each.
1. Your site is too new
Google has to discover, crawl, trust and rank you — and trust takes time. A brand-new site ranking for competitive terms in week one simply doesn't happen.
Fix: Patience plus consistency. Keep publishing useful pages. Most sites see real movement in 3–6 months — see how long SEO takes for realistic timelines.
2. You're targeting keywords that are too competitive
If a one-person business is trying to rank for "insurance" or "web design", it's fighting national brands with huge budgets. You'll lose that fight.
Fix: Go specific. "Web design for tradespeople in Kent" is winnable; "web design" is not. Long-tail, local, intent-driven keywords are where small businesses actually rank.
3. Google can't properly crawl or index your site
If your pages are blocked in robots.txt, buried behind JavaScript Google can't render, or missing from your sitemap, they won't rank — because Google can't see them.
Fix: Check Google Search Console's Pages report for "not indexed" pages, make sure you have a valid XML sitemap submitted, and confirm important pages aren't accidentally blocked.
4. Your content is thin or unhelpful
A page with two sentences and a phone number gives Google nothing to rank. Google rewards pages that genuinely, thoroughly answer what the searcher wanted.
Fix: For each important page, ask "does this fully answer the question someone typed?" Add depth, structure it with clear headings, and cover the related questions too.
5. Your site is slow or not mobile-friendly
Google ranks on Core Web Vitals — page speed and stability — and the majority of searches are on mobile. A slow, clunky mobile experience caps your rankings no matter how good the content is. 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes over three seconds.
Fix: Test on Google PageSpeed Insights, compress images, cut heavy plugins, and make sure the mobile layout is genuinely usable. (See how to make your website load faster.)
6. Nobody links to you
Links from other reputable sites are votes of confidence, and they remain one of Google's strongest ranking signals. A site with zero links looks, to Google, like nobody vouches for it.
Fix: Earn mentions honestly — local press, suppliers, partners, industry directories, genuinely useful content people want to link to. Quality beats quantity; a few relevant links outweigh hundreds of spammy ones.
7. Your on-page basics are missing
No clear title tags, vague headings, no mention of your actual keywords, no internal links between pages — these basics are easy to skip and they matter.
Fix: Give every page a clear, keyword-honest title tag and meta description, use one H1 that says what the page is about, and link related pages together so Google understands your site's structure.
8. You have no local presence
If you're a local business without a claimed Google Business Profile, you're invisible in the map pack — where most local searches convert.
Fix: Claim and complete your Business Profile, get your NAP consistent, and gather reviews. (Full steps in how to get found on Google.)
The honest truth about ranking
Ranking isn't luck or a secret trick — it's the sum of doing these eight things properly and consistently. Anyone promising "#1 in 30 days" is selling you hope. The businesses that rank are the ones that fix the basics and keep showing up.
