Winter work for trades comes from being the firm a cold household can find and reach, not from a Christmas campaign: the boiler-service season has run since late September, emergency-plumber searches peak in cold snaps, and Christmas week brings call-outs while other firms are closed. The jobs tend to go to the business with a complete Google Business Profile showing real festive hours, a small Search campaign with a call button, and a "from" price that includes everything.
What does winter demand for trades look like in UK search data?
Google Trends shows relative interest, not volumes. On a five-year UK pull on 12 October 2026, interest in "boiler service" sits on a plateau from late September to the end of November every year, with "boiler service cost" and "boiler service near me" among its related queries. Interest in "emergency plumber" peaks in cold snaps: its five-year peaks include the weeks beginning 11 December 2022, 3 December 2023 and 5 January 2025, and its related queries are "plumber near me emergency", "emergency plumber cost" and "24 hour emergency plumber".
Two claims are left out on purpose: the percentage rise in boiler-repair searches that trade directories quote each autumn, and the line that breakdowns peak in winter. Neither has a primary source we could open.
Which dates matter: 25 October, 1 November, 14 November and 24 December to 1 January?
| Date | What happens | What to have done |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday 25 October | Clocks went back one hour at 2am | Service offer live on profile and website |
| Sunday 1 November | Cold Weather Payment period opened, 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 | Emergency wording and "from" prices checked |
| Saturday 14 November | Gravesend Christmas Lights Switch-On, 13:00 to 19:00 and Dartford's Big Christmas Switch On | Outdoor lighting and socket jobs booked |
| 24 December to 1 January | Bank holidays on Friday 25 December, Monday 28 December and Friday 1 January | Special hours set, call cover agreed |
The Cold Weather Payment matters as a weather marker: it pays £25 for each seven-day period when the average temperature is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees or below, and those are the weeks your phone rings.
How should a heating engineer or plumber set up Google Business Profile for the season?
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, and that "businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results". For a trade that means every service listed, the real service area, and your Gas Safe registration number in the description: by law, all gas businesses and engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register, and Citizens Advice tells householders you must use a Gas Safe registered engineer and to treat a trader who offers only a mobile number as a warning sign.
Then set the hours. Google's help page says to confirm your hours for official holidays even if they are the same as your regular hours; special hours cover a closure of up to six days in a row, and seven or more means marking the business temporarily closed. Set 24 to 28 December and 31 December to 1 January this week, with hours you will genuinely answer. Our Google Business Profile setup guide covers verification and categories, and how to get more Google reviews covers the routine, because Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.
If your only web presence is that mobile number on a directory, the profile needs a website: a one-page website with up to seven sections and one round of revisions, for a one-off £99.99 including VAT; you buy your domain and hosting from a provider you choose and we set them up; the 48 hours starts when we receive your completed brief.
What should a small Search campaign on "emergency plumber" and "boiler service cost" look like?
A one-van firm has no reason to start with Performance Max's store goals: Google recommends a minimum of 10 business locations for campaigns with store visits or store sales. Build one campaign with two ad groups, one around "emergency plumber near me" and "24 hour emergency plumber", one around "boiler service cost" and "boiler service near me", limited to the towns you will drive to.
Add a call asset: Google says you can show your phone number with your ads by using call assets, with a clickable call button under the ad on a phone, and that you can set the number to appear only when your business can accept calls. Add a location asset, which takes its data from Google Maps and your Business Profile, and use ad scheduling so the ad runs only in hours someone will pick up. A missed call from a paid click is money spent for nothing.
No primary UK source says how much seasonal competition raises these click costs, so set a daily budget you can afford to lose for a fortnight before raising it.
What can you legally say about "from" prices, call-out fees and bank-holiday rates?
This is what the guidance says, not legal advice. Since 6 April 2025, section 230 of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 has treated an invitation to purchase as omitting material information if it leaves out the total price, which "includes any fees, taxes, charges or other payments that the consumer will necessarily incur". The CMA's summary, updated 7 January 2026, allows a "from" price only as long as it includes all applicable mandatory charges and says it is illegal to hide additional fees, taxes or other charges. On that reading, a call-out fee everyone pays belongs inside the "from" figure.
Where part of the price cannot be worked out in advance, the Act asks for how that part will be calculated, with as much prominence as the price itself, which for a bank-holiday rate points to stating the uplift up front. For ads, CAP Code rule 3.18 says quoted prices must include non-optional taxes, duties, fees and charges that apply to all or most buyers, and the ASA says prices to consumers should include VAT in the stated price.
Wording that follows the guidance: "Boiler service from £X, including VAT and call-out, within [area]. Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day: standard rate plus £Y per hour, agreed before we set off."
What are the hooks for electricians and roofers?
For electricians the switch-ons are the deadline: outdoor sockets and festoon lighting are wanted before 14 November in Gravesend and Dartford, and a Business Profile post saying so is enough. The quieter hook is landlord inspections. In England, regulation 3 of the Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector and Social Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020 requires every installation in let premises to be inspected and tested by a qualified person at intervals of no more than five years, or sooner if the last report says so. You can email past landlord customers a reminder under the soft opt-in in regulation 22 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations: details obtained in the course of a sale, similar services only, and a simple way to refuse in every message.
For roofers, the Met Office published the 2026/27 storm names on 1 September: Austen, Boelo, Chloe, Dano and Evelyn lead the list, and a storm is typically named when an amber or red warning is expected. Draft the post now, "Storm [name] damage: booking inspections from [date]", so it goes out the morning after.
How do you take the Christmas-week call-outs without a 24-hour phone?
Most UK businesses are one person: the government's 2025 estimates put 75% of UK private sector businesses as having no employees. A one-person firm cannot answer for nine days, so decide which hours you will and make everything agree: the special hours on your profile, the call-asset schedule, the ad schedule and the voicemail. A voicemail saying "we are taking emergency calls between 8am and 6pm on 27, 29 and 30 December, text us the postcode and the fault" turns a missed call into a booking.
Arrange cover for your days off with one other registered engineer and name them in the voicemail; regulation 3(3) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 bars self-employed gas work outside a class approved by the Health and Safety Executive, so that person must be on the Register too. No public source says how many calls a sole trader takes over Christmas; your own call log from last year is the figure to use.
What should builders and decorators do with the quieter weeks?
The FMB's State of Trade survey for the second half of 2025, published 31 March 2026, reported workloads at +22% and enquiries at +18%, with growth slowed against the first half. Demand is there, so use the quiet fortnight for the work that wins spring jobs: photograph the autumn jobs for the profile, send the soft opt-in email to past customers with your January and February dates, and quote the enquiries you have been sitting on.
If you would rather not do this yourself
Everything above can be done in an evening by the person who owns the van; the hours and prices have to come from you anyway. If you would rather have the profile, the Search campaign and the review routine set up and watched through the winter, that is part of our SEO service.
