Christmas Sales for Independent Shops: A Dated UK Plan

An independent shop increases its Christmas sales by treating the season as a short list of dated days and search peaks, and having something ready for each one, rather than waiting for December and hoping. From today, Saturday 7 November, the list runs: the switch-ons next Saturday, Black Friday on 27 November, Small Business Saturday on 5 December, the gift card search peak in the week of 13 December, and the last weekend before Christmas.

How much of a shop's year is November and December?

We took the ONS Retail Sales Index dataset (release of 18 September 2026, value indices, not seasonally adjusted) and divided the November and December 2025 figures by the sum of the twelve months. On that calculation, small businesses (series J5AJ) took 18.3% of their 2025 value in those two months, large businesses (J5AI) 19.5%, non-food stores (EAFT) 20.8% and internet sales (KP5W) 22.0%; January 2025 came in at 84 for small businesses against an average month of 100.

The peak is a little flatter for small shops than for the multiples, and the January dip deeper, so plan for two peaks. The IPA's 2026 Christmas Consumer survey (Opinium, 2,000 UK adults, May 2026) put average planned spend at £647, with gifting taking 58% of it. The BRC said of last December that "Many people were clearly holding out for discounts", then reported non-food sales up 1.7% in January 2026.

Which dated days matter between now and Christmas?

Date What happens What a shop does
Sat 14 Nov Gravesend switch-on, 13:00 to 19:00, town centre, free; Dartford's the same day Open until 19:00, gift guide on the counter
Fri 27 Nov Black Friday; Rochester Christmas Market opens, three weekends to 13 December Black Friday decision made by 13 November
Sat 5 Dec Small Business Saturday; Rochester Dickensian Festival, 5 and 6 December Shop-local story, in-store event, Offer post
Sat 12 and Sun 13 Dec Gravesend Christmas Market, Community Square, Saturday 10:30 to 20:00, Sunday 11:00 to 16:00, free Gift cards and wrapped stock at the front
Sat 19 and Sun 20 Dec Last weekend before Christmas Longer Sunday hours than large shops can offer

Maidstone's switch-on is Thursday 19 November, 17:00 to 19:00. Canterbury's date differed between listings when we checked; confirm it with the council.

What should be live on the website by 14 November?

A gift guide page. The generic "christmas gift guide" results belong to national publishers and retailers, so this page is for people who already know your name or town. Title it with your shop name and town, sort it by price band and recipient, and give every item a photo, its price including VAT, and whether it can be posted or collected. Request indexing in Search Console the day it goes up. Our guide to local SEO for Kent businesses covers the "gift shop near me" side.

A gift card page at its own address: how to buy, what it covers, how it arrives, and the expiry in plain words.

Hours and posts. Add special hours for 24 to 28 December and 31 December to 1 January to your Google Business Profile, and use Offer posts for the dated events: Google says an Offer needs a title, dates and a time, and that "Posts older than 6 months are archived unless a date range is set". If the profile is not set up, start with our Google Business Profile setup guide.

If you also sell online, Google's retailer guidance for Performance Max says to create "new holiday-specific asset groups within existing campaigns" and upload them "at least 2 weeks in advance to make sure they're approved". Two weeks before Black Friday is Friday 13 November. Feed prices include VAT, and a sale price goes in only while a sale is real.

How do you price hampers, bundles and gift sets legally and for VAT?

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute's guidance says "The price of a combination offer should be cheaper than the total cost of buying the same items separately" and that you must "satisfy yourself that the quoted saving is genuine". The ASA's advice, dated 6 October 2026, says a reference price must "represent a genuine established usual selling price" and that "generally the higher reference price should have been charged for a longer duration than the promotional price". The simplest route is to sell the hamper as its own product, with a plain price and no crossed-out figure.

Since 6 April 2026, the Price Marking Order has allowed a "20% off all gifts" notice in place of re-ticketing only where it is "not reasonably practicable" to show each reduced price, and the government's guidance says that route is "not to be relied upon where individual repricing is merely inconvenient".

For VAT, HMRC says a multi-buy where every item carries the same rate is charged "on the combined price" and a mixed-rate one needs "apportionment": a hamper of zero-rated food and a standard-rated candle is the usual case, and Notice 700/7 says you "will usually have to apportion in the normal way". This is what the guidance says, not legal advice; the full checklist, including "was" prices and countdown timers, is in our post on Christmas and Black Friday pricing rules.

How do you win the gift card searches in the week of 13 December?

On a five-year UK Google Trends pull we ran on 12 October (relative interest, not volumes, normalised within a five-term batch), "gift cards" climbs from the week of 15 November to a peak in the week of 13 December, at roughly double its mid-November level. So the page goes up now, with an emailed option.

Royal Mail's last recommended posting dates for Christmas 2026 are 2nd Class Friday 18 December, 1st Class Monday 21 December and Special Delivery Guaranteed Wednesday 23 December. Post physical cards before the cut-off and sell an emailed voucher for the days after.

For VAT, HMRC says a single-purpose voucher, where the VAT liability and place of supply are known at issue, has VAT due when it is issued, and a multi-purpose voucher only "when the voucher is redeemed". On that definition, a card that can also be spent on zero-rated food is multi-purpose. If you want an incentive, a plain bonus ("£50 card, £5 extra to spend in January") avoids inventing a reference price.

What is the plan for Black Friday week if you are not discounting?

Black Friday is 20 days away and the IPA found 22% of consumers plan to spend up to half their Christmas budget during it. Our post on Black Friday for small businesses sets out three honest options: a real offer with a real end date, a counter-offer, or sitting it out. For a shop the counter-offer usually fits: free local delivery or gift wrapping that week, or a bundle priced as above. Decide by Friday 13 November so the feed, the window and the Offer post agree on 27 November.

How does a small shop use the Sunday and Christmas Day rules?

The Sunday Trading Act 1994 defines a large shop as one with a relevant floor area exceeding 280 square metres, lets it open on a Sunday only "during any continuous period of six hours" between 10am and 6pm, and requires those hours to be displayed inside and outside. The Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 says "A large shop must not be open on Christmas Day for the serving of retail customers". GOV.UK's summary is that small shops in England and Wales "can open any day or hour".

The day that matters is Sunday 20 December, the last shopping Sunday, when the retail park must close by 6pm and you need not. Open 9am to 7pm, and say so in your special hours and on the pavement board.

What do you set up now for Boxing Day and January?

Boxing Day falls on a Saturday this year, with the substitute bank holiday on Monday 28 December. The IPA found 27% of people plan to use the Boxing Day and January sales. Four things:

  1. Pricing history. On the ASA guidance above, anything carrying a "was" price in January should be selling at that price now, for longer than the sale will run.
  2. A January page, drafted now and published on 26 December: what is reduced, that gift cards are welcome, and when new stock lands.
  3. A January asset group in Performance Max, scheduled so the sale assets start without you logging in on Boxing Day.
  4. A returns line. GOV.UK says online customers can cancel within 14 days of receiving an item, and that "You only have to accept returns from the person who bought the item". A voluntary "exchange gifts until 31 January" line on receipts brings people back in the quiet month.

If you would rather not do this yourself

A shop owner with a free afternoon can do most of this. If you would rather have the gift guide and gift card pages built, the feed and Performance Max set up, and the Business Profile posts scheduled, that is what our ecommerce marketing service does. Email Sales@britbunch.co.uk with your town and what you sell, and we will say plainly whether it is worth paying for.
