Here are 50 Search Console regex examples you can copy and paste into the Performance report: filters for questions, brand and non-brand searches, buying intent, comparisons, long and AI-style searches, Kent towns and postcodes, UK spelling, seasons, content gaps, noise, page groups and six sector packs. Each one comes with a plain-English explanation, searches it catches and misses, a next step and what it finds on a worked example: an invented 28-day export for Anytown Plumbing, a fictional plumbing and heating firm in Medway, Kent (Example data throughout). Every pattern was tested in two RE2 engines (Google's RE2 library and re2js) on 250 sample searches and page addresses.
Search Console behaviour last checked 21 October 2026. Every result below is example data, not from any real property.
Three rules from Google's Advanced filtering and comparison help page decide how every filter below behaves:
- RE2 syntax. Search Console uses Google's RE2 rules. RE2 has no lookahead or lookbehind, so to leave words out you set a filter to Doesn't match regex instead.
- Partial match. A pattern matches anywhere in the search or page address unless you add
^(starts with) or$(ends with). - Not case-sensitive. Capitals are ignored by default. Add
(?-i)only when capitals matter.
New to regex? Start with our Search Console regex guide, which explains the symbols. This page is the list: copy a filter with the button on its code block, swap the example brand (Anytown Plumbing), the Kent towns and the example domain for yours, and use its Test this filter link to try it on your own searches first.
How to use these filters
- In Search Console, open Performance, then Search results. Leave the search type on Web with Text-based selected; the multimodal view has no queries.
- Click + Add filter and choose Query, or Page for P1 to P7.
- Change the first drop-down to Custom (regex), then choose Matches regex or Doesn't match regex, as each filter says.
- Paste the pattern into the box labelled "Enter regular expression (regex)" and click Apply. The chip above the chart then reads "Query: Custom (regex)".

Five things to know before you paste:
- Swap in your own words. Replace the example brand spellings (B1 to B3), Kent towns (G2 to G4) and domain (P3) with yours, and keep
\beither side of short words, so a word like hire does not match inside sapphire. - No spaces around
|. Search Console treats a space as a character to match. In a live check on 21 October 2026, a two-search pattern found both rows without spaces around the bar and nothing with them. On the example data,(boiler service rochester|emergency plumber chatham)finds 2 queries and 290 impressions, while(boiler service rochester | emergency plumber chatham)finds nothing. Google's help page shows spaces around the bar in its template, so do not copy that layout. - A zero can mean a broken pattern. In the same live check, Search Console accepted a lookahead pattern, which RE2 does not support, with no warning, then showed 0 clicks and 0 impressions. If a filter returns nothing, test it before you believe it. Our troubleshooting guide covers the usual causes.
- One Query filter at a time. Choosing Query again reopens the filter you already have, so you cannot stack two query patterns. You can still add a Page filter alongside it.
- Up to 4,096 characters. That is the most the regex box accepts (checked 21 October 2026). The longest filter here, G2, is 426.

boiler(?!cover) applied as a Query filter. An unsupported pattern fails silently and looks like zero searches. Behaviour checked live on 21 October 2026. Example data. How to read each filter
Every entry gives the job it does, how to set it, the pattern, a plain-English reading, searches it matches and does not match, a next step, its result on the example export and a link that opens it in our free tester. For Doesn't match filters, Kept lists searches the filter still shows and Hidden lists the ones it removes. Sample searches are examples, and so is the export.

The samples are hand-picked, so passing them does not rule out a false match in your data. Run a filter on your own searches in the tester before you rely on it.
What the filters find on the example export
We ran all 50 on the example export: 180 visible queries carrying 15,825 impressions and 134 clicks, and 25 pages (Example data: Anytown Plumbing, example.co.uk, 28 days). Of the 46 Matches filters, 44 find rows: 37 query filters and all seven page filters. Only CT3 (AI search topics) and V5 (the accountants and solicitors pack) find nothing, which is what you would expect on a plumber's site. All four exclusions hide something: B2 hides the 14 brand rows, N1 three job and course searches, N2 two existing-customer searches and G6 three look-alike places.
The results are worked out from the export with Search Console's rules, with position weighted by impressions. The export is invented, so its shape is realistic and its figures are round enough to follow; what matters is how each filter behaves on it. Filtered views leave out anonymised queries, so a filter and its opposite may not add up to the unfiltered total.

Questions (Q1 to Q6)
Question searches tell you exactly what to answer. On the example export Q1 finds 33 of 180 visible queries and 27.5% of visible impressions, at a weighted position of 9.3 (Example data). Q1 to Q4 start with ^ and close the word with \b. That matters: Google's own 2021 example, what|how|when|why, also matches "somehow" and "show", because Search Console matches text anywhere. To turn these searches into FAQs, guides and service-page answers, see how to find question searches in Search Console.

Q1. Starts with a question word
Use: Find the questions people already find you for. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 51 characters.
^(who|what|what's|whats|when|where|why|which|how)\b
In plain English: Shows searches whose first word is who, what, what's, when, where, why, which or how. The \b after the word stops "however" and "whatsapp" counting.
Matches:
- how long does seo take
- what's the best way to get google reviews
- why is my website not on google
Does not match:
- however seo works
- whatsapp business marketing
Next: Sort by impressions, group the top 20 by theme and answer each in the first sentence of the best-matching page, or write a new answer post.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 33 of 180 queries, 4,354 of 15,825 impressions (27.5%), 23 clicks, weighted position 9.3.
Q2. Yes/no questions
Use: Catch yes/no questions that Q1 misses. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 114 characters.
^(can|could|should|do|does|did|is|are|will|would) (i|you|we|my|it|a|an|the|they|your|our|there|this|that|google)\b
In plain English: Shows searches that start with can, should, do, is, will (and similar) followed by a pronoun or article, such as "can I" or "is it". Requiring the second word stops "will writing service" and "can recycling" being counted as questions.
Matches:
- can i do seo myself
- is it worth paying for seo
- do i need a website for my business
Does not match:
- will writing service gravesend
- can recycling kent
Next: Add the best ones as FAQ entries with a one-line yes or no answer, then the reason.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 7 of 180 queries, 495 of 15,825 impressions (3.1%), 2 clicks, weighted position 12.0.
Q3. How-to (task) questions
Use: Find task searches for step-by-step guides. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 46 characters.
^how (to|do i|do you|can i|can you|should i)\b
In plain English: Shows searches starting "how to", "how do I", "how can I" and similar: people trying to get something done.
Matches:
- how to get more google reviews
- how do i add my business to google maps
- how do i know if my boiler needs replacing
Does not match:
- how much does a website cost
- however seo works
Next: Turn the top tasks into numbered guides or checklists; these also make good Reels.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 8 of 180 queries, 1,535 of 15,825 impressions (9.7%), 9 clicks, weighted position 8.0.
Q4. Cost and time questions
Use: Find price and timing worries. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 34 characters.
^how (much|long|many|often|soon)\b
In plain English: Shows searches starting "how much", "how long", "how many", "how often" or "how soon".
Matches:
- how much does seo cost uk
- how long does seo take
- how many google reviews do i need
Does not match:
- how to build a website
- seo cost kent
Next: Publish honest price ranges and timelines, and link them to the matching service page.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 10 of 180 queries, 1,259 of 15,825 impressions (8.0%), 6 clicks, weighted position 9.9.
Q5. Definitions ("what is", "meaning")
Use: Find definition searches for a glossary. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 84 characters.
^what (is|are|does)\b|\b(meaning|definition|define|explained|stand for|stands for)\b
In plain English: Shows "what is / what are / what does" at the start, or words like meaning, definition or explained anywhere.
Matches:
- what is local seo
- ppc meaning
- what does cpc stand for
Does not match:
- what time does the shop open
- plumber rochester
Next: Open each answer with a one-sentence definition; collect terms on a glossary page.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 4 of 180 queries, 400 of 15,825 impressions (2.5%), 1 click, weighted position 13.8.
Q6. Decision questions
Use: Find people weighing up whether to buy. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 69 characters.
\b(worth it|is it worth|should i|do i need|pros and cons|good idea)\b
In plain English: Shows searches containing "worth it", "should I", "do I need", "pros and cons" or "good idea".
Matches:
- is seo worth it for small business
- do i need a website if i have facebook
- google ads pros and cons
Does not match:
- seo services kent
- website design ideas
Next: Write balanced "is it worth it" answers with costs, a clear verdict and when not to buy.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 5 of 180 queries, 440 of 15,825 impressions (2.8%), 2 clicks, weighted position 10.3.
Brand and non-brand (B1 to B3)
Splitting brand from non-brand stops your own name flattering your SEO numbers. Google offers an AI-assisted branded queries filter, but it did not appear for a small property when we checked on 21 October 2026, and Google says it is not available for sites with a low number of impressions. A brand regex works for everyone. B1 and B2 use the same pattern in opposite modes; their totals may not add up to the unfiltered total, because filtered views leave out anonymised queries.
On the example export B1 finds 14 rows: 0.8% of visible impressions but 41 of 134 clicks, because people who search for a firm's name click it (Example data). On a smaller site the brand view can be empty, and that is not proof of zero brand searches: rare searches are hidden. More in Search Console branded queries: regex or Google's filter?
B1. Brand searches with misspellings
Use: See searches for your business name, including typos. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 81 characters.
\b(anytown[ -]?plumbing|any ?town ?plumbing|anytown ?plumbers|anytown ?heating)\b
In plain English: Shows any search containing the brand in the listed spellings, with or without a space or hyphen. Anytown Plumbing is an invented firm; swap in your own name and its common misspellings.
Matches:
- anytown plumbing reviews
- any town plumbing rochester
- anytown-plumbing boiler service
Does not match:
- anytime plumbing medway
- any plumber in town
Next: Check that the homepage and contact page rank first for these; fix titles if not.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 14 of 180 queries, 125 of 15,825 impressions (0.8%), 41 clicks, weighted position 1.1.
B2. Non-brand searches
Use: Measure SEO growth without your brand inflating it. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Doesn't match regex. 81 characters.
\b(anytown[ -]?plumbing|any ?town ?plumbing|anytown ?plumbers|anytown ?heating)\b
In plain English: Same pattern, but set to Doesn't match regex, so it hides brand searches and shows everything else. Filtered totals drop anonymised queries, so brand plus non-brand may not add up to the unfiltered total.
Kept (still shown):
- emergency plumber rochester
- how much does a new boiler cost uk
- boiler losing pressure
Hidden:
- anytown plumbing contact
- anytown plumbers
Next: Track non-brand clicks and impressions month on month; this is the number SEO work should move.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 166 of 180 queries kept, 15,700 of 15,825 impressions (99.2%); 14 hidden.
B3. Reputation checks on your brand
Use: Spot reputation searches about your business. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 162 characters.
\b(anytown[ -]?plumbing)\b.*\b(reviews?|complaints?|scam|legit|trustpilot|any good)\b|\b(reviews?|complaints?|scam|legit|trustpilot)\b.*\b(anytown[ -]?plumbing)\b
In plain English: Shows searches with the brand and a word like reviews, scam, legit or Trustpilot, in either order.
Matches:
- anytown plumbing reviews
- is anytown plumbing legit
- reviews of anytown plumbing
Does not match:
- anytown plumbing contact
- boiler service reviews medway
Next: Make sure your reviews page and Google Business Profile answer these searches well.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 2 of 180 queries, 14 of 15,825 impressions (0.1%), 4 clicks, weighted position 1.2.
Buying intent (I1 to I6)
These filters find searches with money behind them: prices, shortlists, hiring, quotes and bookings, DIY and problems. The words are short, so most sit between \b marks to stop them matching inside longer words. On the example export, hire on its own matches "sapphire bathroom taps" as well as "hire a plumber for a day", because sapphire ends in hire; \bhire\b keeps only the second (Example data). The £ sign sits outside \b in I1, because RE2's word boundary only understands A to Z letters, digits and the underscore.

\b. Example data, tested in RE2.I1. Price and cost intent
Use: Find people checking prices. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 103 characters.
\b(price|prices|pricing|cost|costs|how much|fee|fees|cheap|cheapest|affordable|budget|quote|quotes)\b|£
In plain English: Shows searches containing price, cost, how much, fee, cheap, affordable, budget or quote, or a £ sign anywhere. The £ sits outside \b because RE2 word boundaries only understand plain A to Z letters, digits and the underscore. "rates" is left out so "business rates" does not count.
Matches:
- seo pricing uk
- how much is a website
- web design under £500
Does not match:
- business rates kent
- costume shop gravesend
Next: Add visible price ranges or "from" prices to service pages and answer cost questions directly.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 22 of 180 queries, 2,174 of 15,825 impressions (13.7%), 9 clicks, weighted position 12.1.
I2. "Best" and "top" shortlists
Use: Find shortlist searches. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 50 characters.
\b(best|top \d+|top rated|top-rated|recommended)\b
In plain English: Shows best, top 10 (any number), top rated or recommended as whole words. A bare "top" is avoided because it would match "top up boiler pressure".
Matches:
- best plumber in medway
- top 10 marketing tips
- top rated web designer gravesend
Does not match:
- top up boiler pressure
- bestway wholesale
Next: Earn a place on shortlists: reviews, case studies and comparison content.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 3 of 180 queries, 148 of 15,825 impressions (0.9%), 1 click, weighted position 13.8.
I3. Hire a provider
Use: Find people looking to hire. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 106 characters.
\b(agency|agencies|company|companies|consultant|consultancy|freelancer|specialist|expert|hire|services?)\b
In plain English: Shows agency, company, consultant, specialist, expert, hire or service(s) as whole words. Without \b, "hire" would also match inside "sapphire" and "service" inside "servicemaster".
Matches:
- plumbing company rochester kent
- hire a plumber for a day
- heating services medway
Does not match:
- sapphire bathroom taps
- servicemaster clean
Next: Check these land on service pages, not blog posts; if not, strengthen the service page and link to it.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 24 of 180 queries, 1,978 of 15,825 impressions (12.5%), 11 clicks, weighted position 11.0.
I4. Quote, booking and enquiry
Use: Find enquiry-ready searches. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 93 characters.
\b(quote|quotes|quotation|book|booking|appointment|consultation|call ?back|enquiry|enquire)\b
In plain English: Shows quote, book, booking, appointment, consultation, call back or enquiry. \b stops "facebook" counting as "book".
Matches:
- web design quote
- book seo consultation
- free marketing consultation
Does not match:
- facebook ads
- plumber rochester
Next: Make sure the landing page has a clear quote or booking button above the fold.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 5 of 180 queries, 135 of 15,825 impressions (0.9%), 0 clicks, weighted position 12.5.
I5. Free and DIY
Use: Separate free and DIY searchers. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 42 characters.
\b(free|diy|yourself|myself|for nothing)\b
In plain English: Shows free, DIY, yourself, myself or "for nothing". \b stops "freelance" counting.
Matches:
- free seo audit
- diy website for my business
- can i do seo myself
Does not match:
- freelance web designer
- plumber rochester
Next: Serve them with guides and free tools; do not judge service-page conversion on these.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 5 of 180 queries, 420 of 15,825 impressions (2.7%), 1 click, weighted position 14.3.
I6. Problems and fixes
Use: Find problems your service fixes. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 116 characters.
\b(not working|stopped working|not showing|broken|error|problem|issue|fix|dropped|drop|why is|why isn.?t|why does)\b
In plain English: Shows not working, broken, error, problem, fix, dropped, "why is", "why isn't" and similar. The . in isn.?t accepts straight or curly apostrophes.
Matches:
- website traffic dropped
- why isn't my website ranking
- google business profile not showing
Does not match:
- website design ideas
- dropshipping uk
Next: Write troubleshooting posts that solve the problem, then offer help for the cases people cannot fix themselves.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 14 of 180 queries, 1,464 of 15,825 impressions (9.3%), 9 clicks, weighted position 9.7.
Comparisons (C1 and C2)
Comparison and switching searches come from people weighing up a decision, so a fair comparison page can win them. On the example export C1 finds 4 searches, led by "combi vs system boiler", and C2 one, "alternatives to a gas boiler" (Example data).
C1. "vs" and compare
Use: Find comparison searches. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 62 characters.
\b(vs|versus|compare|compared|comparison|difference between)\b
In plain English: Shows vs, versus, compare, comparison or "difference between".
Matches:
- google ads vs facebook ads
- website builder versus web designer
- wix compared to squarespace
Does not match:
- versatile templates
- plumber rochester
Next: Write fair comparison pages with a clear recommendation for each type of business.

Use: Find people switching from something. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 81 characters.
\b(alternatives?|instead of|similar to|replacement for|switch from|better than)\b
In plain English: Shows alternative(s), "instead of", "similar to", "switch from" or "better than".
Matches:
- wix alternative uk
- instead of an agency
- switch from wordpress to shopify
Does not match:
- alternating colours
- plumber rochester
Next: Write "X alternatives for UK small businesses" posts; include the move process.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 1 of 180 queries, 50 of 15,825 impressions (0.3%), 0 clicks, weighted position 22.7.
Short, long and AI-style searches (L1 to L4)
L1 to L3 count words: \S+ is a run of characters with no space and \s+ is the space between words. On the example export 71 of 180 visible queries have five or more words, 44.1% of visible impressions, and the longest is 20 words and 105 characters (Example data). Length is only a clue. Search Console does not mark which searches came from AI tools, and its Generative AI features report has no queries tab (checked 21 October 2026). L4 flags rows that look machine-made; read each match before you exclude it. For more on long and AI-style searches, see our guide to question searches.
L1. Short searches (1 to 2 words)
Use: See your short, broad searches. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 14 characters.
^\S+(\s+\S+)?$
In plain English: Shows searches of one or two words only (^ and $ fix the whole search; \S+ is a word, \s+ a space).
Matches:
- seo
- web design
- boiler service
Does not match:
- web design kent
- how much does seo cost
Next: Expect low CTR here; use them to judge broad visibility, not leads.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 18 of 180 queries, 1,549 of 15,825 impressions (9.8%), 29 clicks, weighted position 16.6.
L2. Long-tail (5 or more words)
Use: See your long-tail searches. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 17 characters.
^\S+(\s+\S+){4,}$
In plain English: Shows searches of five or more words.
Matches:
- how much does seo cost uk
- best web designer in gravesend kent
- how often should a boiler be serviced
Does not match:
- plumber rochester
- boiler service rochester
Next: Long-tail searches are specific; answer them precisely in headings and FAQs.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 71 of 180 queries, 6,984 of 15,825 impressions (44.1%), 39 clicks, weighted position 10.8.
L3. Prompt-length searches (10 or more words)
Use: See prompt-length searches. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 17 characters.
^\S+(\s+\S+){9,}$
In plain English: Shows searches of ten or more words. This measures length only; it cannot tell you a search came from AI.
Matches:
- how much does it cost to move a boiler to the loft
- what to do when your boiler stops working in the middle of winter
- how do i get my landlord to fix the boiler in my rented flat
Does not match:
- how much does a new boiler cost uk
- boiler service rochester
Next: Read these one by one; they show the exact wording of detailed questions.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 7 of 180 queries, 444 of 15,825 impressions (2.8%), 3 clicks, weighted position 11.0.
L4. AI-tool fingerprint (location suffix, "?.", 3+ commas)
Use: Spot rows that look machine-made. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 32 characters.
my location is|\?\.|(,[^,]*){3,}
In plain English: Shows searches containing "my location is", "?." or three or more commas. Some practitioners describe prompts ending "my location is ..." as automated tracker probes; that a given row is automated is inference. The comma rule also catches human lists (the third sample below is one), so read each row before excluding it.
Matches:
- how much does a new boiler cost for a 3 bed house?. my location is chatham, kent, england, united kingdom
- best plumber near me?. my location is rochester
- plumber, electrician, roofer, builder medway
Does not match:
- emergency plumber rochester
- what is a combi boiler?
Next: Exclude them before judging CTR, and check none of your own tools sent them.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 1 of 180 queries, 9 of 15,825 impressions (0.1%), 0 clicks, weighted position 8.3.
Local: near me, towns and postcodes (G1 to G6)
On the example export, local searches are the ones closest to the top of page 1: the 47 Kent searches G2 finds sit at a weighted position of 7.9, against 11.5 for all visible searches (Example data). Place names need care. Deal and Sandwich are everyday words, so G2 only counts them before "kent". G3 finds a service and a town in either order by spelling out both orders, because RE2 has no lookahead. Postcode areas do not follow county lines: TN also covers parts of East Sussex and DA reaches Bexley. Near me searches suit trades, salons and takeaways; the example plumber has five, led by "plumber near me".
Search Console takes one Query filter at a time, so G6 cannot be stacked on top of G2. To see the look-alikes, paste G6 with Matches regex instead, or, in our query sorter, add G6 as a bucket above G2, switch that bucket to Matches regex and keep First match wins, so look-alike rows are set aside before G2 counts the rest. More in local SEO regex for Search Console and, for ranking locally, our guide to local SEO in Kent.
G1. "Near me" and proximity
Use: Find "near me" searches. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 81 characters.
near me|nearby|near by|nearest|close to me|close by|around me|in my area|open now
In plain English: Shows near me, nearby, nearest, close to me, in my area or open now.
Matches:
- seo agency near me
- plumber nearby
- takeaway open now
Does not match:
- plumber rochester
- local seo tips
Next: Strengthen your Google Business Profile and location pages; these searches are often answered by the map.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 5 of 180 queries, 845 of 15,825 impressions (5.3%), 2 clicks, weighted position 13.2.
G2. Kent towns (safer list)
Use: Find searches naming your area. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 426 characters.
\b(kent|gravesend|northfleet|dartford|swanscombe|greenhithe|ebbsfleet|maidstone|medway|rochester|chatham|gillingham|strood|sittingbourne|faversham|sheerness|canterbury|whitstable|herne bay|margate|ramsgate|broadstairs|dover|folkestone|ashford|tenterden|tonbridge|tunbridge wells|sevenoaks|swanley|westerham|edenbridge|west malling|snodland|aylesford|cranbrook|paddock wood|bluewater)\b|\b(deal|sandwich|hythe|rainham),? kent\b
In plain English: Shows Kent and Kent towns as whole words. Deal, Sandwich, Hythe and Rainham only count when followed by Kent, because "best deal" and "sandwich shop" are everyday words. Swap in your own towns.
Matches:
- plumber rochester
- boiler service medway
- plumber in deal kent
Does not match:
- best deal on boiler service
- kentucky fried chicken
Next: Compare positions for local searches with the rest; local is often where a small business is closest to page 1.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 47 of 180 queries, 3,196 of 15,825 impressions (20.2%), 46 clicks, weighted position 7.9.
G3. Service + town, either order (the RE2 "AND")
Use: Find service + place searches in any order. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 221 characters.
\b(plumber|plumbers|plumbing|boiler|heating|bathroom)\b.*\b(rochester|chatham|gillingham|strood|medway|kent)\b|\b(rochester|chatham|gillingham|strood|medway|kent)\b.*\b(plumber|plumbers|plumbing|boiler|heating|bathroom)\b
In plain English: RE2 has no lookahead, so "both words" is written as A.*B|B.*A: a service then a town, or a town then a service.
Matches:
- boiler service rochester
- medway emergency plumber

\b(da1[0-3]|me[0-9]{1,2}|ct[0-9]{1,2}|tn[0-9]{1,2})\b
In plain English: Shows DA10 to DA13 and ME, CT or TN followed by one or two digits as a whole word. Postcode areas do not follow county lines: TN also covers East Sussex and DA reaches Bexley. DA10 is Swanscombe. The DA part is the Gravesend end only; if you cover Dartford, add da[1-4]|da9 (DA5 to DA8 and DA14 to DA18 are mostly the London Borough of Bexley).
Matches:

In plain English: Set to Doesn't match regex: hides Kent State, Clark Kent, Rochester NY, Gillingham in Dorset, Dover Delaware and similar. The closing \b keeps "dover dentist" in. Gillingham FC is not on the list because the club is in Gillingham, Kent; football searches belong in a separate noise filter if you want them gone.
Kept (still shown):
- dover dentist
- rochester kent roofer
- gillingham plumber
Hidden:
- rochester ny restaurants
- clark kent actor
Next: Search Console takes one Query filter at a time, so it cannot be stacked on G2. To see the look-alikes, switch it to Matches regex. Add new look-alikes as you find them.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 177 of 180 queries kept, 15,818 of 15,825 impressions (100.0%); 3 hidden.
Spelling, dates and seasons (U1, Y1, Y2)
U1 counts British and American spellings together, so a topic's totals are not split between optimisation and optimization. Y1 finds any year without going out of date each January, and Y2 covers UK seasons and retail dates. On the example export U1 matches two colour searches, Y1 five searches naming 2026 and Y2 four seasonal ones (Example data).

Next: Use it so topic totals are not split by spelling.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 2 of 180 queries, 32 of 15,825 impressions (0.2%), 0 clicks, weighted position 30.5.
Y1. Any year in the search

In plain English: Shows UK seasons and retail dates such as Christmas, Black Friday, Mother's Day, bank holiday and half term. The . in mother.?s accepts any apostrophe.
Matches:
- christmas marketing ideas small business

- plumber rochester
Next: Plan seasonal pages 6 to 8 weeks before the date and refresh last year's pages.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 4 of 180 queries, 120 of 15,825 impressions (0.8%), 0 clicks, weighted position 14.2.
Content ideas and cannibalisation (CT1 to CT3, K1, K2)
CT1 to CT3 point to content worth making: audience-specific versions, templates and tools, and AI-search explainers. K1 and K2 check whether one topic is spread across several pages: apply the filter, open the Pages tab and see which pages share the impressions.
K2 is the worked example. Boiler and radiator problems are the example plumber's largest topic: 25 of 180 visible queries and 23.5% of visible impressions, 28 clicks, at a weighted position of 9.5 (Example data). Apply it and open the Pages tab: if the losing-pressure post and the no-hot-water post share the same searches, they are competing with each other.
CT1. Audience and industry modifiers
Use: Find who is searching. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 167 characters.

Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 25 of 180 queries, 3,724 of 15,825 impressions (23.5%), 28 clicks, weighted position 9.5.
Noise to exclude (N1, N2)
Exclusions remove searches that will never turn into customers, such as job hunters and existing customers checking an order. Set them to Doesn't match regex and run them on their own, since only one Query filter can be active at a time. Then look at what they hid. On the example export N2 hides "anytown plumbing phone number" and "anytown plumbing contact", which are brand searches worth keeping if new customers reach you by phone (Example data). An exclusion only catches the words you thought of, and it cannot tell a returning customer from a new one.
N1. Jobs, courses and careers (exclude)
Use: Remove job seekers and students. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Doesn't match regex. 135 characters.
\b(jobs?|careers?|salary|salaries|vacanc(y|ies)|apprenticeships?|internships?|courses?|training|qualifications?|hiring|how to become)\b

N2. Existing-customer searches (exclude, shops)
Use: Remove existing-customer searches (shops). Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Doesn't match regex. 158 characters.
track(ing)?\b|where is my order|returns?\b|refund|exchange|size guide|sizing|customer service|contact|phone number|cancel|\blog ?in\b|\baccount\b|card balance
In plain English: Set to Doesn't match regex: hides tracking, returns, refund, contact, login, account and card balance searches. It says "card balance", not "balance", so a toy shop keeps "balance bike" searches. Opticians should delete "contact" (contact lenses) and car or phone dealers "exchange" (part exchange). "track" is a whole word in searches like "keep track of my boiler service dates", so \b would not narrow it; if that matters, replace track(ing)?\b with order tracking|track my order|tracking number.
Kept (still shown):
- silver bangles
- buy linen bedding uk
- silver toe rings for sale
Hidden:
- order tracking
- gift card balance
Next: Use for new-customer analysis; review the hidden rows once to check nothing useful went.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 178 of 180 queries kept, 15,812 of 15,825 impressions (99.9%); 2 hidden.
Page filters (P1 to P7)
Page values are full addresses, including https:// and your domain, so a page pattern that starts with ^/ finds nothing. In a live check on 21 October 2026, ^/blog/ returned no data while /blog/ returned rows; on the example export /blog/ finds 8 pages and 9,060 impressions (Example data). Google assigns most data to the canonical address, so P6 and other patterns aimed at parameter or duplicate addresses may return nothing. Pages tab data is counted per page, so it can show more impressions than the report total: 19,860 against 19,400 on the example export. You can combine a Page filter with a Query filter.
Page patterns also work in the Generative AI features report, which has no queries (checked live, 21 October 2026).
P1. Blog posts only
Use: See blog posts only. Set it as Page, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 8 characters.
/blog/.+
In plain English: Shows page addresses containing /blog/ followed by at least one character, so the blog index /blog/ itself is left out.

Does not match:
https://example.co.uk/blog/https://example.co.uk/services/boiler-repair/
Next: Compare blog clicks with service pages; check posts link to the right service.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 7 of 25 pages, 8,900 of 19,860 impressions (44.8%), 35 clicks, weighted position 8.2.
P2. Service pages (not the hub)
Use: See individual service pages. Set it as Page, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 17 characters.
/services/[^/]+/$
In plain English: Shows addresses with /services/, one folder name, then a closing slash, so the hub and deeper pages are left out.

Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 5 of 25 pages, 6,110 of 19,860 impressions (30.8%), 43 clicks, weighted position 9.2.
P3. Homepage only
Use: See the homepage only. Set it as Page, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 36 characters.
^https?://(www\.)?example\.co\.uk/?$
In plain English: Page values are full URLs, so the pattern starts with https:// and allows www. The dots in the domain are escaped (.). Swap in your own domain.
Matches:
https://example.co.uk/https://example.co.ukhttps://www.example.co.uk/
Does not match:
https://example.co.uk/about/https://example.co.uk/?utm_source=gbp
Next: Branded and broad searches usually land here; check its title and description.

Does not match:
https://example.co.uk/blog/boiler-losing-pressure/https://example.co.uk/about/
Next: Track this group monthly; it is closer to revenue than total clicks.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 8 of 25 pages, 6,670 of 19,860 impressions (33.6%), 48 clicks, weighted position 9.1.
P5. Blog cluster by URL words
Use: Group posts on one topic by their URL words. Set it as Page, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 43 characters.
/blog/[^/]*(boiler|radiator|heating)[^/]*/$
In plain English: Shows blog posts whose address contains boiler, radiator or heating. Swap in your own topic words.
Matches:

Does not match:

Next: Compare the cluster's position and clicks before and after an update using Compare mode.
Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 6 of 25 pages, 8,420 of 19,860 impressions (42.4%), 33 clicks, weighted position 8.0.
P6. URLs with parameters
Use: Find addresses with parameters. Set it as Page, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 2 characters.

In plain English: Shows any address containing a ?. The backslash makes ? a plain character. Most data is assigned to canonical URLs, so this may return nothing on a healthy site.
Matches:

Does not match:

Example data (Anytown Plumbing, an invented Kent firm, 28 days): 1 of 25 pages, 240 of 19,860 impressions (1.2%), 1 click, weighted position 6.3.
Sector packs (V1 to V6)
Six packs for common small-business types: trades, salons and barbers, restaurants and takeaways, shops, accountants and solicitors, and gyms and studios. They are written for sector sites. On the example plumber, V1 (trades) finds 25 urgent searches and 25 clicks; V6 (gyms) also finds 18, every one a price search caught by "how much", "costs" or "cheap", which is the warning: a pack can look busy on the wrong site (Example data).
V1. Trades: urgent jobs
Use: Trades: find urgent jobs. Set it as Query, Custom (regex), Matches regex. 163 characters.
emergency|urgent|24 ?(hours?|hrs?)|24/7|24-7|same day|out of hours|tonight|asap|burst|leak(s|ed|ing|y)?\b|no (heating|hot water|power|electric)|tripping|locked out

Download the full library and test any filter on your own export
All 50 filters are free to take away:
- CSV of all 50 filters: one row per filter with its ID, name, group, query or page, mode, regex, plain-English meaning, sample matches and non-matches, next step, character count, test details and its result on the example export. It opens in Excel or Google Sheets.
- Example export (zip): the invented Search Console export behind every result on this page, in Google's export layout, to try in the sorter.
- Cheat sheet (PDF): print it and keep it beside your desk.
- Regex tester: paste a pattern and your own searches or page addresses, and see which lines it matches before you touch Search Console. Each "Test this filter" link above opens it with that filter loaded, for example the question filter Q1.
- Query sorter: sort a Search Console export into groups such as questions, local, brand and price, with clicks, impressions and position for each group.
If a filter behaves oddly, our guide to why Search Console regex is not working walks through nine common fixes, and the Search Console regex guide explains the symbols used here.
